Sunday we visited the sister Statue of Liberty along the Seine. Supposedly this is a little known tourist attraction here in Paris, and there was hardly anyone else around which was nice. The statue is an exact quarter-size replica of the Statue of Liberty in New York City and stands 36 feet tall. In doing some research after the fact, it turns out that there are replicas of varying sizes all over the world, including several throughout France as well as some in Austria, Germany, Italy, Japan, China and Vietnam. Over 200 replicas have also been donated by the Boy Scouts to local communities back in the States.
The statue in Paris was a gift from the US to France back in 1889 in commemoration of the centennial of the French Revolution. Originally it faced the Eiffel Tower (so as not to turn its back on the Elysee Palace), but its creator was disappointed that it didn’t face the New York City Statue of Liberty. He finally got his wish and it was rotated to face America for the World Fair in 1937. The tablet that the Statue de la liberté holds is inscribed with the dates IV Juillet 1776 et XIV Julliet 1789 which are the dates of the US and French revolutions.
